Our Summer Camp fun includes children up to 7 years of age. We have picnics on our wonderful 1 1/2 acre playground, nature walks on West Bloomfield Nature Trails, bike parades and water play. We enjoy the out of doors each day. Every week begins with a new theme-based lesson. This year's themes are: Welcome to Camp, Let's Celebrate America's Birthday, My Family, Monstrous, Hats, Author Spotlight, What If We Recycle a...and Make a..., Ocean Commotion, Tales and Rhymes, Who Hatches from an Egg? and School Time!
As an example of our activities, 2016's summer group project for the six-and seven-year-olds has been to make a vegetable garden. The class began by having a bake sale to raise money for the building supplies. They baked and sold goodies to the parents. With this money, the children built and painted a raised veggie garden with the help of Mr. Brad.
The children loved checking the garden each day and excitedly pointed out new flowers or how much bigger something had grown. As of this writing (late August), they've eaten three tomatoes, and the carrots are looking really good, as are three cucumber plants and a zucchini plant. Our first cucumber was just spotted a few days ago. The only thing that wasn't from seed was the tomato plant. The gourds are from seeds they saved from last fall when they took apart gourds in class. These seeds were carefully packed in envelopes and labeled. Five gourds are growing so far but lots of blossoms, so maybe more to come! Next year the children plan to plant some veggies in May or June so it will be a longer growing season.
This was really a fun project. The children had lots of hands-on experience of seeing how food is grown. Who knows? We may have a future horticulturist in the class!

In a previous year during "I can Make a Difference" week, the children drew pictures and sent to service men and women abroad, drew and displayed greeting signs (Smile, Have a Nice Day, You are Special, etc.) along Arline Drive for our neighbors to enjoy, and invited our senior friends from Sunrise Senior Living to join us for lunch and a little party. We had hot dogs together, played bingo with them, sang a few songs (a few senior friends join in!) and gave them greeting cards to take home. It was a wonderful experience for both young and old! It was a perfect blend of senior daycare and child daycare.
We invite children up to seven years of age to join us for the Summer Camp Fun at Whitney Bloomfield Childcare Center. We would love to have your child with us! Full and part time available for your child care needs.
